Join us for worship, study, and service . . .

Picture
We've been waiting for you! It's true. Why? It's because we believe that every person who comes into the circle of this special fellowship was sent by God Himself. It is not by accident that we have the joy of meeting you, so above all else, we want to express Christ's love to you with genuine, heartfelt warmth. We are eager to know you, and we are excited to share with you the marvelous ways that God is working in our church.

It will not take you long to discover that this is truly a family, rich in the relationships that matter most. Growing together, we worship, we serve, we laugh, we cry, we learn, and we reach out to our world with life-transforming truth. We reach out to you as well.

Our doors are open. Our hearts are open, too. If you have been thinking, praying, searching, and hoping for a place to belong, we say "Welcome home!"

Reverend Putnam and Family

Picture
Our minister is Reverend Byron Putnam, whose wife Heather is our Minister of Music.

The entire family -- including six children ranging in age from 14 to 24 -- is musical, and the family ministers as a team. Johnathan, Katherine, Jeremy, and Bethany are away at college, while Paige and Claire attend area schools.

Methodist ministers abound in Reverend  Putnam's family. His father was one, and so are three of his brothers, serving churches in Louisiana and Texas.

Heather and Byron met while attending Asbury Seminary. She is a native of Calcutta, India, where her mother was principal at a Methodist school and where both parents encouraged her musical talent. She holds a master's degree in church music and is an integral part of this work.

200+ Year History of Methodism in Covington

Picture
_First United Methodist Church Covington has a rich history encompassing over 200 years.

From 1799 to 1811, this area was served by the Natchez Mission.  The Wilkinson and the Amite Circuits reached what was then called West Florida, Louisiana. In 1811, the area became St. Tammany Parish. Covington's first connection with Methodism was through the Amite Circuit.

The first church stood where the St. Tammany Parish Administrative Complex is located, on Jefferson Avenue between 23rd and 24th Avenues.

The first official record for any church in Covington was for the Covington Methodist Church in 1834, a two-story structure with a parsonage next door. In 1920, fire consumed the structure, and a new church and parsonage were built at the current location of Jefferson and 22nd.  This wood frame sanctuary served Methodist families in Covington and surrounding areas until 1967, when construction on the present building began.

Our current church building and adjoining eduction building serve our membership as well as other ministries.
